Both southbound lanes of Interstate 81 remain closed Monday afternoon following a two-vehicle collision between a pick-up truck and a tractor trailer carrying 50,000 pounds of strawberries.

Corinne Gellar, a spokesperson with the Virginia State Police, reported a tractor-trailer loaded with approximately 50,000 pounds of strawberries overturned in the interstate’s southbound lane following a two-vehicle crash at 12:12 p.m. The tractor trailer landed on top of a red pick-up truck, according to troopers on the scene.

At least one person was airlifted by a Virginia State Police Med-Flight helicopter from the scene, Gellar said.

Four large tow trucks are being used to lift the tractor-trailer off of the vehicle.

All southbound lanes are closed at this time with traffic being detoured at Exit 84. A spokesperson with the Virginia State Police said there is no indication at this time when the lanes will be reopened.
