Reprieve granted: Deadline for Mercer County cats facing euthanasia has been lifted

PRINCETON — A deadline for cats facing the prospect of euthanasia by 6 p.m. today at the Mercer County Animal Shelter has been lifted.

Approximately 65 cats needed to be moved so their quarters can be disinfected. A respiratory infection has been spreading among the felines.

County Commissioner Gene Buckner said about 30 cats have been adopted so far today.

“We had a deadline set today,” he said. “The deadline’s been lifted. We have several promises from volunteers that they’re going to help get the cats out of the shelter and house them until they get healthy, and bring them back to the shelter.”

“We’re getting a lot of them adopted,” Director Lisa Williams said this afternoon. “We’re super busy right now.”
