128 named in Tazewell indictments

TAZEWELL, Va. — Murder, attempted capital murder, impersonating a police officer and hunting with firearms while under the influence are among the indictments recently handed down by the Tazewell County Grand Jury.

The grand jury list issued Monday by the Tazewell County Commonwealth Attorney’s Office included a total of 130 indictments on 128 individuals. In one case, a local man has been indicted on charges stemming from the shooting death of his brother last January.

Steven Vencill, 61, a resident of the Meadows Street area of Tazewell, Va., has been indicted by the grand jury on charges of murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and two counts of discharging a firearm within an occupied dwelling or house.

Vencill was arrested Jan. 20 after his brother, Dinest Ricky Vencill, 55, of Tazewell, Va., died of a gunshot. The brothers shared a home at Meadows Street. When the shooting took place inside the house, a friend who was visiting the brothers called Tazewell County 911 to report the incident. Several weapons were recovered from the residence at that time.

Vencill is being held without bond at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Tazewell, Va.
