Mercer County sheriff’s deputy warns of tax scam in area

PRINCETON — A Mercer County man visited the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department on Monday to report that he had been contacted by phone and told he owed a large sum of money to the Internal Revenue Service, according to Deputy W.E. Rose.

“The person who called him told the Mercer County resident that he owed $4,995 to the IRS and provided another number to call to settle the debt,” Rose said. “He made the call, but then also contacted the IRS, who told the individual that he was being victimized by a scam.”

For several years, the IRS has compiled a “Dirty Dozen” of scams, and according to Rose, the scam the resident reported is among them. Rose encouraged people to visit (IRS.gov) to learn more about scams.
