Lightning strike disrupts local emergency communications in region

BLUEFIELD — A lightning strike this morning from a fast-moving thunderstorm in Kanawha County has temporarily knocked out system-wide emergency communications, although local control systems are still operational, according to Jimmy Gianato, director of the state Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.

“We had a major storm pass through the area this morning where one of our key sites is located,” Gianato said. “The control system is still working in local areas, but the statewide system is down.”

Gianato said electricians are at the site where the lightning struck, working to resolve and repair the problem.
