Spaulding’s new trial set for March 31

PRINCETON — A new trial date was set Friday in the case of a Mercer County man facing multiple charges including sexual assault and possession of child pornography.

A mistrial was declared last week in the trial of John Spaulding, 41, of Montcalm. Spaulding was previously indicted on six counts of sexual assault the first degree, attempt to commit a felony, and 50 charges of possession of material depicting minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

During a status hearing Friday before Circuit Court Judge William Sadler, a new trial date for Spaulding was set for March 31 at 9 a.m.

Sadler also set final pre-trial motions in the case for March 17 at 9:30 a.m.

After three days of testimony, the jury began its deliberations at approximately 11:15 a.m. on Feb. 7. By 5:35 p.m. the same day, one member of the jury was having chest pains and anxiety attacks and indicated she could no longer participate. Since the alternate juror had already been released from service when deliberations began, Sadler declared a mistrial in the case.
