Winter storm watch issued for much of the region as heavy snow threat looms

BLUEFIELD — The National Weather Service in Blacksburg, Va., has issued a winter storm watch for much of the region, including Mercer, Tazewell, Bland, Giles and Monroe counties.

The watch is calling for the potential for heavy snow Wednesday into early Thursday. The winter storm watch is in effect from Wednesday morning through Thursday evening.

According to the watch, snowfall accumulations will range from 5 to 8 inches in the mountains to 6 to 10 inches in other areas. Regions expected to be impacted include those locations north of highway U.S. Route 460, according to the watch.

A winter storm watch means there is a potential for significant snow, sleet or ice accumulations that may impact travel.
