Five people transported from two-vehicle wreck

BLUEWELL — Five people were transported Monday to a Mercer County hospital after a two-vehicle crash closed Route 20 for almost an hour.

The incident was reported at approximately 12:50 p.m. on Route 20 near the intersection of Red Oak Ridge Road. Both lanes of traffic were closed while the Bluewell Volunteer Fire Department and the Bluefield Rescue Squad worked at the scene.

Senior Trooper L.F. Lee of the West Virginia State Police Princeton detachment said a Chevrolet Impala that was turning onto Red Oak Ridge Road was struck in the rear by a Ford Escape SUV.

The Impala’s female driver and three passengers, and the driver of the SUV, were transported to Bluefield Regional Medical Center. Injuries among the Impala’s driver and passengers included bruised ribs and a hip injury. One passenger riding in the rear seat was pregnant, and an ultrasound was being performed, Lee said. The driver of the SUV had a back injury.

The conditions of the people who were transported were not available Monday evening. Lee declined to release any names Monday, saying the crash was still under investigation.

After the vehicles were cleared away, Route 20 reopened at approximately 1:45 p.m.
