Inmate sentenced for attempting to escape McDowell County federal prison

WELCH — A federal inmate was sentenced today to three years and one month in prison for attempting to escape the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) at McDowell, U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin said.

Jason Dunlap, an inmate at FCI McDowell, 35, previously pleaded guilty in September 2013, Goodwin said. Dunlap’s sentence was imposed by Senior United States District Court Judge David A. Faber in Bluefield.

Goodwin said on May 7, 2013, Dunlap attempted to escape at FCI McDowell by climbing to the top of the first of two perimeter fences at the prison. Dunlap was immediately apprehended by prison officials.

The court ordered the sentence to run consecutive to the defendant’s current prison term.  Goodwin said Dunlap is currently serving a 188-month sentence on his convictions in federal court in California of bank robbery, armed bank robbery and interstate transportation of stolen motor vehicles.

The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Prisons.  Assistant United States Attorney John File handled the prosecution.
