McDowell County man arrested after allegedly brandishing sword

WELCH — A McDowell County man was arrested Wednesday after allegedly brandishing a samurai sword and threatening to kill a woman.

Kenneth Ray Fowler Jr., 40, of the Welch area was arrested Wednesday and charged with misdemeanor charges including domestic battery, domestic assault, and brandishing, according to Trooper B.D. Gillespie of the West Virginia State Police Welch detachment.

The case began Tuesday when a woman advised that her former roommate, Fowler, became angry with her  because she moved away from his home while he was a patient at a behavioral health facility, Gillespie said. She said that he struck her in the face with a motorcycle helmet, brandished a samurai sword and threatened to kill her before fleeing the area on an ATV.

State troopers and deputies with the Mc-Dowell County Sheriff’s Depart-ment conducted a search, but were unable to locate Fowler, Gillespie said.

Gillespie said he returned to the victim’s home Wednesday to obtain additional information and learned that at 2 a.m. that morning, Fowler had returned to her home and threatened her. She said that she could not call 911 because she didn’t have a phone at her residence.

Gillespie stated that he then went to Fowler’s home in Leckie, found him there and placed him under arrest. Fowler was then taken to the WVSP Welch detachment where he was processed without incident.

Fowler was later arraigned before Magistrate Steve Cox and remanded to the McDowell County Jail in lieu of a $1,500 bond.
