Gary man charged with burglary, robbery surrenders

GARY —  A McDowell County man surrendered to authorities in Welch on Wednesday afternoon after learning that he was wanted on robbery and burglary charges related to an incident that occurred at a Cherry Street residence in Gary, according to a press release from the Gary Police Department.

Damon Renko, 25, of Gary, surrendered to Welch Police Chief E.A. Muncy and Patrolman First Class A.D. Perry on Wednesday afternoon. Perry took Renko before McDowell County Magistrate Steve Cox who set his bond at $5,000. Renko was being held at the McDowell County holding center on Wednesday afternoon.

According to a press release from Gary Police Chief S.P. “Pat” McKinney, Renko allegedly visited a resident of Cherry Lane in Gary. An argument arose between the victim and Renko, and the resident walked Renko out to the back porch. When the two men got outside, a physical altercation ensued and Renko allegedly overpowered the homeowner. The victim got free and fled, and Renko then returned inside the home and made off with all of the remaining beer.

Renko will likely appear in McDowell County magistrate court within 10 days for a preliminary hearing.
