Man with sword threatens woman

WELCH — A McDowell County man is facing charges of domestic assault and domestic battery after brandishing a samurai sword.

Kenneth Ray Fowler Jr., 40, of the Welch area was arrested Wednesday and charged with misdemeanor charges including domestic battery, domestic assault, and brandishing, according to Trooper B.D. Gillespie of the West Virginia State Police Welch detachment.

The case began Tuesday when a woman advised that her former roommate, Fowler, became angry with her  because she moved away from his home while he was a patient at the Behavioral Health Pavilion in Bluefield, Gillespie said. She said that he struck her in the face with a motorcycle helmet, brandished a samurai sword and threatened to kill her before fleeing the area on an ATV. State troopers and deputies with the McDowell County Sheriff’s Department conducted a search.

Fowler was arrested without incident Wednesday at his home in Leckie, Gillespie said. He was later arraigned before Magistrate Steve Cox and was reprimanded to the McDowell County Jail in lieu of a $1,500 bond.
