Federal inmate pleads guilty to weapon’s charge

BLUEFIELD — A federal inmate in McDowell County faces up to 33 months imprisonment and a quarter-million dollar fine after pleading guilty in federal court to being in possession of a weapon.

Antonio Quintero, 36, an inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution at Welch, pled guilty to the charge Monday in federal court in Bluefield, United States Attorney Booth Goodwin announced.

“On March 7, staff members at the prison were escorting Quintero when they saw him throw something into a trash can,” Goodwin said in a press release. “When they searched the trash can, they recovered a homemade knife commonly referred to as a ‘shank.’ ’’

Senior United States District Judge David A. Faber has scheduled Quintero’s sentencing for Oct. 27.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons conducted the investigation, and the prosecution was handled by Assistant United States Attorney John File.
