Two McDowell men arrested on charges related to roofing theft

ALGOMA — A trooper with the Welch Detachment of the West Virginia State Police arrested two McDowell men on charges related to the theft of metal roofing from an unoccupied residence in Algoma.

Kevin Mitchem, 33, and Larry Jennings, 32, both of Algoma, were arrested Saturday afternoon on one count each of conspiracy, grand larceny and destruction of property — all felonies — as well as a misdemeanor charge of trespassing, according to Trooper C.A. Dunn.

“The victim contacted us today to report that he had heard loud noises the previous weekend at an abandoned house that he owns,” Dunn said. “He talked with a neighbor last week who told him he had bought some metal from some guys up there, and he put two and two together and figured out what was happening.”

Dunn said that after the neighbor was informed that the metal had been stolen, he immediately returned it to the victim. “That wasn’t all of it, though,” Dunn said.

He interviewed the two suspects in the case who said that a man driving a blue pickup truck with Virginia registration told them he owned the house, and told them it was OK to take the metal.

Dunn was processing the two suspects in the case Saturday evening.
