Police have captured a Bluefield man who was wanted in connection with the death of his seven-week old infant.
Cassidy Byrd, 23, of Bluefield, is currently being held on a suicide watch at the Southern Regional Jail in Beaver. Byrd is charged with the death of a child by a parent, custodian or guardian by abuse, according to Detective K.L. Adams of the Bluefield Police Department.
Adams said police located the man late Tuesday night at his mother’s residence in Bluefield. When authorities entered the residence, Byrd attempted to flee and tried to jump out of a bedroom window. However, Adams said he was able to grab the man as he attempted to jump out of the window. At that point, he was arrested without incident.
Adams said the state medical examiner has ruled that the child died as a result of being struck to the head. The infant also had a busted lip and bruising to his body.
Byrd was arraigned Wednesday via video conferencing from the Southern Regional Jail in Beaver by Mercer County Magistrate Jim Dent, who set bond in the case at $100,000. If convicted on the charge, Byrd faces a term of 10 to 40 years in prison.
Police were contacted by officials at Bluefield Regional Medical Center where the child was dead on arrival. At that point, the investigation was launched.
