Severe thunderstorm watch issued for much of the region

BLUEFIELD — More severe weather could be rolling into the region this evening.

The National Weather Service in Blacksburg, Va., has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Mercer, McDowell, Tazewell and Summers counties. The warning is in effect until 9 p.m. this evening. At 1:23 p.m., Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm near Claypool Hill in Tazewell County, according to a special statement issued by the National Weather Service. The storm could create dime size hail and wind gusts up to 40 mph.
