West Point garrison commander expected to be new city manager

BLUEFIELD — The current garrison commander of West Point is expected to be named the new Bluefield city manager when the board convenes next week.

Col. Dane Rideout is listed in a board agenda item that would allow Mayor Tom Cole to execute a contractual agreement with him to become the city manager.

Cole confirmed the item is on the agenda. “We do have a candidate who has agreed to come to work for us, and we’ve agreed on the terms,” Cole said. “If all goes as planned, we will officially have a new city manager on Tuesday.”

Cole also noted, “We looked at hiring a city manager as an investment in the city, not as an expense to the city.”

Rideout is a former enlisted Marine and a 1990 graduate of Ball State University, according to biographical information on the West Point website.

Prior to his command at West Point, Rideout served as deputy of the 14th Human Resources Sustainment Center at Fort Bragg, N.C., according to the biography. He was then assigned as the division G-1 for the 82nd Airborne Division.

“Deploying with the Division to Afghanistan as the CJTF-82/Regional Command East J-1, he was responsible for the planning, coordination and synchronization of all Human Resource assets,” the biography states.

The role of a garrison commander is similar to that of a city manager, in that they are generally in charge of a facility and its day-to-day operations.
