Bowman and guests to take Chicory Square stage

BLUEFIELD — Three local musicians will take to the stage Friday when the latest edition of the Chicory Square Concert Series come to downtown Bluefield.

Barry Lee Bowman of Sandlick has performed at Chicory Square several times. He usually performs alone, but this Friday at noon he plans to have some guests joining him on stage.

“One of them is my son, Dalton Bowman. He plays guitar, but he will be playing base mostly,” Bowman said. “And the other is Casey Lewis. He’s a current guitar student, but he’s very advanced for his age. He’s also been selected to perform at the Wayne Henderson Guitar Festival. He’s been selected to compete in that.”

Barry Bowman plays several types of string instruments.

“I play guitar, I sing, and I play banjo, and mandolin. I probably won’t do all that this time,” he said. “I play pretty much any string instrument, mostly, to some degree.”

Bowman said that the concert could include a variety of music such as fiddle tunes, Celtic music, some blues, and some country or gospel music.

“I’ve been playing 29 years,” he said. “I actually, believe it or not, started when I was in college, and I’ve always been interested in music. I had a friend who lived beside of me, and he played and I started getting into picking on the guitar.”

Bowman said his mother had given him a guitar when he was 15 or 16 years old. He started experimenting with it and took classes in college.

“In about eight years, I was out playing. It was something that really grabbed my attention,” Bowman recalled. “I actually teach instrumental music privately.”

“I’ve always enjoyed outdoor performances. The crowd always seems receptive,” he added.
