Deal to perform at Chicory Square

BLUEFIELD — A local performer who grew up listening to the Beatles and Motown will be sharing his enthusiasm for music Friday at the Chicory Square Downtown Concert Series.

Sponsored by the Bluefield Daily Telegraph, the series brings musicians and other entertainers to downtown Bluefield every Saturday at noon until Aug. 29. Friday’s entertainer will be Matt Deal, a veteran of the Chicory Square stage.

“This may be my third or fourth time,” Deal said. “They keep asking me back, so I’m happy about it. I just love being outside and getting to perform, which is usually not the case.”

Deal said he plans to perform acoustically and sing while playing a mix of original and classic tunes. He has been playing the guitar since he was 15 years old.

“I was very lucky, basically,” he recalled. “Against all logic and reason, my dad chose to give me a guitar. There were a number of things piled up in my closet that I wanted to do, but this one stuck.”

Instead of getting formal lessons, Deal learned by ear to play the guitar. Music was already a big part of his life.

“I had been raised on a steady diet of Beatles and Motown and classic rock, so it was pretty much inevitable,” Deal stated. “It’s a disease that none of us can shake.”

Deal usually figures out which songs he’s going to play by looking at his audience.

“I’ve got something for every age,” he said.

Deal is the news and sports director for L&L Broadcasting. He grew up in Welch and moved to Mercer County when he was a teenager.
