Little Jimmie shoppers hit the stores; 9 days until big holiday party

BLUEFIELD — With the 2012 campaign goal met, shopping is now underway at the Bluefield Kmart for hundreds of toys that will be distributed to more than 825 children next week at the Little Jimmie party.

The big party is now only nine days away. The Community Christmas Tree campaign went over the top Tuesday with help from a $3,000 donation from a “anonymous” reader of the Daily Telegraph. Contributions Wednesday of $35 brought this year’s total to date to $30,308.

The campaign goal was $30,000.

More than 825 children will be served this year — an increase from previous campaigns that event organizers attribute to the great need faced by area families this holiday season.

In anticipation of the big day, a team of volunteers shoppers will be purchasing hundreds of toys over the next couple of days at Kmart in Bluefield. The toys will then be placed into the vintage red bags that have come to symbolize the Little Jimmie party over the decades. In addition to two toys — individually selected for each child —  the red bags also will include food, treats, a book, a toboggan, a pair of gloves and toothpaste and tooth brushes to children who would otherwise go without at Christmas.

The Daily Telegraph has sponsored the Community Christmas Tree campaign since 1917.

The campaign is also known as the Little Jimmie program, a reference to an iconic drawing that has accompanied the campaign kickoff since its early days.

Those who would still like to contribute to the Community Christmas Tree program can mail donations to: Bluefield Daily Telegraph, c/o Community Christmas Tree, P.O. Box 1599, Bluefield, WV, 24701; or drop them off at the Daily Telegraph office. Checks should be made payable to the Community Christmas Tree Fund.
