Firefighters from four departments battle blaze

LASHMEET — Firefighters from four departments responded to a structure fire Saturday morning off of Beeson Road, and were on the scene for about six hours before extinguishing the blaze.

“The son of the home owner was sleeping upstairs when the smoke woke him up,” Chief S.A. Sommers of the Matoaka Volunteer Fire Department said. “He managed to climb out an attic window, get to the ground and re-enter the house on the ground floor to get his parents out of the house. He saved their lives.”

In addition to Matoaka, volunteer firefighters from the Bluestone Valley, East River and Montcalm fire departments responded to the fire.
