PRINCETON — A Mercer County family that had just gone inside their home to eat the meal they had prepared on an outdoor grill were surprised Wednesday when an 180-pound black bear came up on the porch and attempted to join them for dinner.

“We saw him when we arrived inside, but he ran across the road and into the woods,” Cpl. S.A. Sommers of the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department said. “The family said that they had seen a bigger bear before, but this was the first one that came up on the porch.” Sommers said the bear was a second-year bear.

The residence was located off of Ambrose Lane, Sommers said. “They had the air-conditioner on when they were eating, and it pushed the aroma of the food out of the windows and attracted the bear,” Sommers said. “It tore up a screen door and a window screen.” The incident took place at about 7:30 p.m
