A University of Charleston-Beckley student was found dead inside her dorm room at Hogan Hall around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to Beckley Police.Shelia Hopkins, nickname Coko, played at Bluefield High School. She was a freshman at UC-Beckley, Bluefield High School Athletic Director Kim Miller confirmed Thursday.
A moment of silence was held for Hopkins prior to the boy’s Graham-Beaver game Wednesday night.
Beckley Police also have confirmed Sheila “Coko” Hopkins, 19, of Bluefield, was the student who was found dead in her dorm room Wednesday at the University of Charleston-Beckley’s Hogan Hall.
Detective Cpl. M.G. Bragg said Hopkins was a basketball player for the UC women’s basketball team.
Wednesday, Bragg said the death did not appear to be suspicious, but police are investigating.
Hopkins’ body was sent to the state medical examiner’s office to determine the cause of death.
“Our deepest sympathies go out to the family of a University of Charleston-Beckley student who was found deceased in her room in Hogan Hall today,” UC President Dr. Ed Welch said Wednesday.
“This is truly a heartbreaking situation for many people. We are meeting with UC - Beckley students, faculty and staff at this time to help them deal with this tragedy. The university will provide further comment, as appropriate, when more information is available.”
UC Communications Director Scott Castleman said the university is working to help students deal with the situation and a counselor will be available to any student wishing to talk.
