Two face murder charges

PANTHER — Two McDowell County residents are facing charges of first-degree murder in the overdose death of an Avondale man.

The McDowell County Sheriff’s Department received a 911 call about a deceased person in the Panther area of the county, Sheriff Martin B. West said in a statement issued Thursday morning. Corporal R.L. Blevins was assigned to the case along with Deputy R.L. Jones and Deputy R.R. Freeman.

McDowell County 911 received the call at approximately 4:30 p.m. Wednes-day. Upon arriving at the residence along the 3900 section of Panther Mohawk Road, Blevins found Thomas Kyle Owens, 36, of Avondale dead. The home was occupied by Brian Collins, 40, and Priscilla Faye Dotson, 33.

Upon additional investigation, deputies learned that Owens had been given drugs that were prescribed to Collins and Dotson, West said.

Both Collins and Dotson were later charged with first-degree murder, according to Sgt. James E. Muncy Jr. Muncy declined to say what types of drugs were involved in the case.

Both Collins and Dotson were arraigned before Magistrate Steve Cox. No bond was set because circuit court judges must set bond in cases involving murder charges. No bond hearing date had been set as of Thursday.

Collins and Dotson were being detained at McDowell County’s holding unit pending transport to the Southwest Regional Jail in Logan County.
