Woman arrested for driving under the influence after wrecking

BLUEFIELD — A local woman was arrested Monday and charged with driving under the influence after a single-vehicle crash on Bluefield Avenue.

The incident occurred at approximately 2:45 p.m. when a Buick driven by Deborah Blaskowski, 56, of Bluefield, left the road and went over an embankment, according to Patrolman M.T. Hatfield of the Bluefield Police Department.

The car was traveling eastbound when witnesses who were “almost victims” said it swerved from left to right, almost hitting their vehicles, before going over the embankment, Hatfield said.

Blaskowski was arrested after Hatfield conducted field sobriety tests and charged her with DUI. No other people were in the car.

One witness, Daniel Ritchie, 24, of Bluefield, Va., said he was traveling west in his pickup truck toward the state line when the Buick swerved into his lane.

“I had to honk my horn,” he said. The car swerved and almost hit another truck before leaving the road.

“She barely missed me and barely missed him” Ritchie said.

The Bluefield Fire Department and the Bluefield Rescue Squad were also sent to the scene.
