Man turns himself in in attempted armed robbery

PRINCETON — The man who was a suspect in the attempted robbery of an Airport Road area machine shop Friday morning, surrendered to police Saturday night, a Mercer County sheriff’s deputy said.

Ricky Hopkins, 27, of Princeton, surrendered to Deputy J.D. Ellison, and was arrainged Sunday morning before Mercer County Magistrate Susan Honaker who set his bond at $5,000. Hopkins was being held Sunday afternoon in the Bluefield City Jail.

Hopkins was the suspect in a botched robbery of the Ceres Gear & Machine Shop. The 70-year-old owner of the business grabbed the arm of his assailant and although the attacker struck the business owner on the head with a handgun, the 70-year-old man was able to push his attacker out of the door and lock it to prevent him from gaining re-entry.
