Second-grade students publish ‘The ABC’s of West Virginia’

PRINCETON — One second-grade class is putting their content standards in the classroom to good use by publishing a book.

Jill DeVault’s second-grade class at Princeton Primary used their West Virginia history content standards to write a book which they titled The ABC’s of West Virginia.

“Each student chose a letter and then picked a landmark or another item that represented West Virginia,” DeVault said.

Students learned not only about history but also the reading, writing and research process, DeVault said.

Because of the many snow days missed this winter, DeVault said it was quite the process to try and get the book finished.

“We started it in January and had to push the publishing date back a couple times, we finally finished the book in March,” DeVault said.

Just a few examples of different letters in the book include B for black bear, W for Winterplace and O for orchards, DeVault said.

“I am extremely proud of my students and to be published at such a young age is so wonderful. They now have a memory they can keep forever,” DeVault said.
