Moore wins Democratic primary in McDowell

WELCH — Delegate Clif Moore, D-McDowell, won the Democratic primary Tuesday in the House of Delegates District 26 contest and will now face Republican Tom Acosta this November.

With 33 of 33 precincts reporting, Moore overcame bad press associated with his second DUI arrest in a three-year period, and was the winner of the Democratic nomination with 1,126 votes. Fellow Democrat S.P. “Pat” McKinney, the current chief of police for the city of Gary and a highway safety officer for the Welch Police Department, trailed Moore with 914 votes.

Acosta, who ran unopposed for the Republican nomination, won the GOP primary with 122 votes. He will now face Moore in November for the House 26 seat. The legislative district includes most of McDowell County and parts of Mercer County.
