Family, friends and well-wishers gathered at the Mercer Mall Wednesday to support an 84-year-old Monroe County woman who rescued her special needs son from a house fire on New Year’s Day.
Wood, 84, was able to rescue her son David “Buddy” Wood, who has Down’s syndrome, when their home caught fire on Jan. 1. The pair are currently staying with Wood’s daughter in Narrows, Va. until their home can be rebuilt. A percentage of all profits earned by Chik-fil-A at the Mercer Mall between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. today will go toward helping Wood rebuild her home in Lindside.
Community support is what Wood said has helped her get through the ordeal.
“I never can thank everyone enough for what they’ve done for me,” she said. “They’ve been so nice. They have given us so much clothes I don’t think I can wear them all. I appreciate everyone so much.”
