KIMBALL — Five people were hospitalized following a three-vehicle crash in McDowell County, including an elderly woman who was airlifted from the scene of the accident, police said Wednesday.

The crash was reported Tuesday at 7 p.m. on U.S. Route 52 in Vivian, near the town of Kimball, according to McDowell County Sheriff Martin West.

“It was a three-vehicle accident,” West said. “An elderly woman crossed the center line and sideswiped the front vehicle, and hit the second vehicle head on. There were five injuries. The elderly woman was critically injured.”

West said the woman remains hospitalized at Charleston Area Medical Center.

“The other four are being treated and are expected to be released at Welch Community Hospital,” West said.
