1 arraigned after stabbings

ASHLAND — A McDowell County man was arraigned Thursday on three felony counts of malicious wounding along with nine additional charges stemming from a stabbing spree at his Northfork Hollow home.

Joseph Lucas, 32, of Ashland, was arrested at a residence late Wednesday night that he apparently shared with some others, including the three victims of the stabbing, Trooper C.A. Dunn of the Welch Detachment of the West Virginia State Police said.

“Two of the victims were stabbed in the chest area,” Dunn said.

“His brother and his brother’s girlfriend were both transported to Bluefield Regional Medical Center. Another female victim was stabbed in the hand when she attempted to take the knife from the suspect.” Dunn said the suspect stabbed the victim with a butcher knife.

McDowell authorities received a call about the stabbing incident at about 9 p.m., Dunn said. “When we arrived on the scene, the suspect hid from us,” Dunn said.

“After we returned to the detachment, a caller called us and said he was back in the house. We went back and picked him up sometime after 11 p.m.”

In addition to the three counts of malicious wounding, Dunn said Lucas was charged with three counts of domestic assault, three counts of battery as well as three counts of brandishing a deadly weapon.

Widener’s Ambulance Service transported at least one of the victims from the scene.

Lucas appeared before McDowell County Magistrate Danny Mitchell who set bond at $75,000 and ordered him remanded to the McDowell County Correctional Center.
