National Weather Services places region under a flash flood watch through this evening

BLUEFIELD — The National Weather Service in Blacksburg has issued a flash flood watch for most of the region, including Tazewell, Mercer, Bland, Giles, Monroe and McDowell counties.

The flash flood warning is in effect from noon today through this evening.

Forecasters say a a strong flow of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico will continue

to flow north into the region. Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms will produce heavy rain, and potentially cause flash flooding. The greatest threat will be in locations that receive repeated periods of heavy rain over the same area.

Bands or clusters of showers and thunderstorms may produce rainfall rates of up to 3 inches per hour, according to the watch. Rainfall totals of  between 1 and 2 inches could occur with locally higher amounts possible.
