Home invasion nets 1 arrest

ALGOMA — A McDowell County man was arrested Tuesday after an early morning home invasion was reported in the Algoma area.

McDowell County 911 notified Trooper B.D. Gillespie of the West Virginia State Police Welch detachment at approximately 2:38 a.m. about a burglary complaint from an Algoma resident.

Gillespie said in his arrest report that he contacted the victim, who told him that a white male he knew as Michael had entered his home uninvited, struck him in the face with a closed fist and took approximately $122 in cash from his short's pocket. The male victim said this happened at approximately 2:30 a.m.

The victim was taken to Bluefield Regional Medical Center in Mercer County for evaluation, Gillespie said. After searching his home, the victim found his alleged attacker’s full name written on a piece of paper and informed Gillespie. The suspect had cut the victim’s lawn in the past.

Later that morning, Gillespie went to the home of Michael England, 25, of the Elkhorn Bottom area. England was arrested and taken to the WVSP Welch detachment for processing.

The felony charges filed against England included robbery and burglary as well as misdemeanor charges of petit larceny, assault, battery and trespassing, Gillespie said.

England was later taken to McDowell County Magistrate Court where he was arraigned before Magistrate Richard VanDyke. England was remanded to the McDowell County Holding Facility in lieu of a $50,000 bond.
