Community Christmas Tree short of fundraising goal

BLUEFIELD — With two and a half weeks to go until this year’s Community Christmas Tree party, the campaign remains nearly $16,500 short of this year’s fundraising goal.

Sponsored by the Bluefield Daily Telegraph, the Community Christmas Tree — also known as the Little Jimmie campaign — provides toys, treats, a book, toboggan, a pair of gloves and other goodies to hundreds of local children in need each year.

More than $200 in donations Tuesday pushed this year’s campaign total to $13,573 — far short of the $30,000 goal.

Organizers expect to serve around 825 children at this year’s party on Saturday, Dec. 21, from noon to 1:30 p.m., at the city auditorium on Stadium Drive in Bluefield.

More than 428 children have already been registered for the Little Jimmie party, and a second round of sign-ups will be held Friday, from 3 to 6 p.m., and Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Bluefield City Auditorium. Children — newborns to age 12 — can be signed up. Parents or legal guardians are required to bring their child’s health insurance or WIC card, or the child’s birth certificate.

Those who would like to contribute to the Community Christmas Tree program can mail donations to: Bluefield Daily Telegraph, c/o Community Christmas Tree, P.O. Box 1599, Bluefield, WV, 24701; or drop them off at the Daily Telegraph office. Checks should be made payable to the Community Christmas Tree Fund.
