Single-vehicle crash claims 1

MONTCALM — A man was killed in Mercer County Friday evening following a single-vehicle wreck that hospitalized two others.

Deputy J.E. Coulter with the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department said one man was killed in a single-vehicle accident on Lorton Lick Road, which occurred around 8 p.m. Friday. Coulter said another male occupant and a female occupant of the vehicle were also transported via Bluefield Rescue Squad with unknown injuries.

Scanner traffic indicated a helicopter landing zone was being set up at Montcalm High School related to the wreck.

Coulter said officials were still working to determine how the silver and red Dodge Durango the three individuals were riding in, left the road. Coulter said the vehicle had flipped and then rolled over about a quarter of a mile up from the intersection of Skating Rink Hollow Road on Lorton Lick Road. The vehicle was heading from Bluewell toward Montcalm on Lorton Lick Road, Coulter said.

A telephone pole a few feet from the accident was dented. Fire officials on the scene said accident victims had been carrying white paint, which was spread across the lawn as a result of the accident. The fence around the yard was not damaged.

Both sides of Lorton Lick Road were closed temporarily Friday evening as crews worked to clear the scene.

In addition to the Bluefield Rescue Squad and Mercer County Sheriff’s Department, the Montcalm Volunteer Fire Department, Bluewell Volunteer Fire Department and Widener’s Ambulance Service all responded to the accident.
