Fire destroys Mercer home

Fire destroyed the home of a family of three Tuesday while the occupants were away at a doctor’s appointment.

The home on Lusk Hollow Road near Spanishburg was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived on the scene, said Chief Tim Farley of the Bluestone Valley Volunteer Fire Department.

“It was a fully involved, single-story wood frame structure,” Farley said. “A family of three lived there, but nobody was home at the time. He (occupant) was going to his doctor in Beckley, and he had to turn around. When he got here the house was gone.”

No injuries were reported, Farley said. The occupants were Mark and Sherry Mitchem.

The fire’s cause had not been determined Tuesday. Firefighters checked the scene for any clues indicating the source of the blaze.

“No, we don’t have a clue at this time how it started,” Farley said. “We’re still sifting through some rubble, but we haven’t found anything concrete yet.”

The Athens, East River, and Matoaka Volunteer Fire Departments were also dispatched. Fire tankers had to shuttle water to Lusk Hollow Road because the house was on a hillside approximately half a mile from the nearest fire hydrant, Farley said.

The home was a total loss.
