Mercer County woman charged with murder back in court

BLUEFIELD — A Princeton woman facing charges including first-degree murder has waived the time limit for a preliminary hearing in Mercer County Magistrate Court.

Latasha Marie Kanode, 23, of Princeton was scheduled to appear before Magistrate Sandra Dorsey for a preliminary hearing. Kanode was arrested Monday along with Steven McDonald, 32, of Bluefield after the shooting death of 44-year-old Sherry Matthews of Princeton. The incident occurred at an apartment along Thornton Avenue in the Lilly Grove area near Princeton.

Kanode’s preliminary hearing has been rescheduled for Sept. 3, said Assistant Prosecuting Attorney John McGinnis.

McDonald’s preliminary hearing has been set for Sept. 4. Kanode and McDonald are being held without bond at the Southern Regional Jail in Beaver.

Both Kanode and McDonald face charges including first-degree murder, first-degree robbery, conspiracy, burglary, and attempted murder. A second person, Edward Lee Thomas, 41, of Princeton, was shot in the chin during the incident, but was taken to Princeton Community Hospital where he was treated and released.

Sheriff Don Meadows said shortly after the arrests that a .40 caliber pistol and a large sum of money were recovered. Robbery has been named as the motive behind the shootings.
