Bluefield Board approves second reading of home rule application

BLUEFIELD — The Bluefield Board of Directors approved a second reading of the home rule application Tuesday evening.

Mayor Tom Cole read the home rule plan and members of the board voted unanimously to submit the written plan to the West Virginia municipal home rule board.

In other news, the Clean Sweep project is still taking place through the city until May 16 and so far has been very successful, according to assistant city manager Josh Cline.

The board recognized the Bluefield State College women’s basketball team as the West Virginia 2014 Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference champions and also the Bluefield High School boy’s basketball team as the West Virginia 2014 state class AA basketball champions.

May 23 at noon will be the first of many Chickory Square concerts and everyone is invited to attend.

Mayor Tom Cole is still looking for residents to join him for his lunch with the mayor sessions and welcomes anyone to sign up.

“I enjoy hearing feedback from our residents and want to be able to help in anyway I can,” Cole said.

The Clean Sweep Schedule is as follows:

Zone 1: Northside and section of the west end of Chestnut Street to Carolina Ave., west along Bluefield Ave. to the Virginia line. May 12 through May 16.

Zone 2: Along Princeton Ave. and eastside of Bland Street to northside of Cumberland Road, east to along Grassy Branch Road. April 21 through April 25.

Zone 3: Southside of Cumberland Road along U.S. Route 460 and East Cumberland Heights. April 28 through May 2.

Zone 4: South Mercer area, downtown area, west side of Bland Street to West Cumberland Road, Washington Street Exit to U.S. Route 460 and west to Virginia line. May 5 through May 9.

Just a reminder city hall will be closed May 13 for voting and also there will be no board of directors meeting May 13.
