Man hunting mushrooms finds hand grenade

GLENWOOD — A Mercer County resident who was searching for mushrooms at a location off of New Hope Road near Spurrier Road came upon something that he didn’t expect to see — a World War II-era, pineapple-style hand grenade.

“After the gentleman contacted us, the Mercer County SRT (Special Response Team) came out and blew it in place,” Trooper B.R. Wood of the Princeton Detachment of the West Virginia State Police said. “A lot of G.I.s brought those back home with them as souvenirs. Most were duds or had the charge removed, but it wasn’t worth the risk, so the SRT blew it in place,” Wood said.

The incident took place around 7 p.m. Wednesday.
