Illegal dump discovered, cleaned in Bluewell area

BLUEWELL — After receiving several complaints, litter control officials and day report center probationers worked Tuesday to clean up an illegal dump site on Spurrier Road.

Spurrier Road near Bluewell is just one of the many illegal dump sites throughout Mercer County, county litter control officer Greg Reed said.

“The last few months people have just been dumping all kinds of trash and it is very visible from the road,” Reed said.

About 10 day report workers were also picking up trash Tuesday.

According to Eli Testerman, director of the Mercer County Solid Waste Authority, there is a much stiffer penalty for dumping illegally than taking the trash to the landfill in the first place.

“It only costs about $2.40 per 100 pounds of trash, which is a lot cheaper than the fine people are going to pay,” Testerman said.

Testerman added that the trash picked up is being looked through to see if someone can be identified.

“We are finding names and addresses and we will be locating these people and fining them,” Testerman said.

Gary Davis, community service coordinator, said the day report program cleaned up 23 tons of trash last year.

“People are just not being responsible and people are not fulfilling their Adopt a Highway duties,” Davis said.
