Sexual abuse complaint leads to pornography discovery in McDowell County

WELCH — A preliminary hearing will be held Friday for a McDowell County man charged with 20 counts of possession of child pornography.

The McDowell County Sheriff's Office received a complaint of sexual abuse by a guardian on April 3, McDowell County Sheriff Martin West said Thursday. Upon investigating the complaint, West said Detective R.L. Blevins with the sheriff’s office found that Jacob Leroy Nealen, 72, of Avondale, near Ieager, was in possession of child pornography.

West said additional charges are pending awaiting results of a digital forensic examination of electronic devices. The McDowell County Sheriffs Office is being assisted by Sgt. Eldridge of the West Virginia State Police, who is assigned to the Internet Crimes against Children Task Force.

West said Nealen is charged with 20 counts of possession of child pornography. He was arraigned before McDowell County Magistrate Daniel Mitchell and bond was set at $50,000 cash only. Nealen was remanded back to the Southwestern Regional Jail awaiting trial. A preliminary hearing is set for Friday.
