Bluefield city manager position brings in about 40 applications

BLUEFIELD — About 40 people are hoping to become Bluefield’s next city manager.

The city Board of Directors hope to start the interview process to hire a new city manager within the next couple of weeks, Mayor Tom Cole said Wednesday.

After next Tuesday’s board of directors meeting, Cole said city officials will hold an executive session to decide who to interview for the city manager position.

“We have all gone through the applications individually and ranked them ourselves,” Cole said. “When we meet next Tuesday we will discuss who the top candidates will be picked to be interviewed.”

The city has had approximately 40 applicants both local and out-of-state to apply for the position, Cole said.

“We will be taking everything on their application into consideration. I hope that we will be able to have someone in the position around the first part of June, but realistically I am not sure that will happen. It will just depend on the circumstances,” Cole said.

Former City Manager Jim Ferguson resigned from the post on Feb. 11.
