Two Bluefields to renew vows on their 90th anniversary

BLUEFIELD — The two Bluefields will renew their vows  at their 90th wedding anniversary this summer.

Officials are planning to duplicate the marriage of the two Bluefields just like during the summer of 1924.

“This wedding anniversary will hopefully be the start of us working on many other projects in the future,” Bluefield, Va., Mayor Don Harris said.

Although no other joint projects have been decided on at this point, the two Bluefields are still willing to work together.

“Some things are still on the table, but nothing has really come along yet. There is certainly a willingness on both sides,” Bluefield Mayor Tom Cole said.

A big opportunity lies within city park but no other decisions have been made, Cole said.

A lot of different things that would be possible for the two Bluefields to work together on have been discussed, but the only thing agreed on to date is the wedding anniversary celebration, according to officials with both Bluefields.

“The two Bluefields have to work together. What’s good for one is good for the other. I do understand there will be things that won’t work for both Bluefields, but once you start that relationship things start to form,” City Manager Jim Ferguson said.

A meeting at the Bluefield, Va., Town Hall will be held next week to form a committee for the anniversary, Ferguson said.

“Once we have the meeting and decide on a committee we will set a date for the event. We hope we will be able to hold it on a Saturday as close as possible to the actual date, July 12, 1924,” Ferguson said.
