Matt Romney scheduled to attend ‘Rally in Support of American Coal Jobs’

GRUNDY, Va. — Matt Romney, the second son of Mitt and Ann Romney, will be attending the “Rally in Support of American Coal Jobs,” scheduled to start at 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 21, at Poplar Gap Park near Grundy, Va., according to information provided by the Romney Campaign. Organizers scheduled the event to last from 2-5 p.m.

The Coal Rally was organized by the Eastern Coal Council, Friends of Coal, FACES and other coal industry leaders, and has been in the works for several weeks. Gates at the park are scheduled to open at noon. The Charlie Daniels Band and Folk Soul Revival will perform. Visitors will be treated to a free hot-dog dinner, and will be eligible for prize drawings.

The access roads to the park are mostly two-lane roads, but Buchanan County Sheriff Ray Foster said that the park site itself has ample parking.

“We’ve handled crowds of 2,000 to 2,500 up there before without many problems,” Foster said. “I’ve heard some estimates that are bigger than that, and I know Charlie Daniels will attract a big crowd. We had the county fair up there this year, and we did pretty well with it.”

Foster said that the event organizers will be assisting with parking, and he said that a few deputies will be on site to assist if they are needed. “I think we’ll be OK,” he said.

State Delegate James W. “Will” Morefield said that several area politicians will attend as well as representatives of several other candidates. Speakers will include State senators Phillip P. Puckett, D-Russell and Charles W. “Bill” Carrico, R-Carroll; Delegates Terry Kilgore, R-Scott, Morefield, R-Tazewell, Joseph Johnson Jr., D-Washington, Del. Israel O’Quinn, R-Grayson,  as well as representatives from U.S. Senator Mark Warner, D-Va., U.S. Rep. Morgan Griffith, R-Va., and U.S. Senate Republican Party candidate George Allen, according to information provided by the Eastern Coal Council.

Morefield said that Emory Altizer, 92, a Russell County, Va., resident who retired from coal mining earlier this year after working in the mines more than 70 years, will introduce Matt Romney. “We are all just excited that Matt Romney will be attending the rally,” Morefield said.

“He will discuss President (Barack) Obama’s war on coal which is killing jobs and increasing energy prices in the Commonwealth, and contrast it with Mitt Romney’s plan for an all-of-the-above energy policy,” according to the Romney Campaign press release.

Matthew Romney was born in 1971. He is senior vice president Captial Markets at Excel Trust, of a San Diego, Calif., based real estate investment trust firm. He and his wife, Laurie, have four children.
