Manhunt continues for murder suspect

BLUEFIELD — The Bluefield Police Department is still searching for the man who allegedly killed his infant son.

Cassidy Byrd, 23, of Bluefield, is charged in connection with the death of his infant son Ethan Byrd, Detective K.L. Adams said. The infant died on April 5.

“We believe he is still in the Bluefield area, someone had spotted him last night,” Adams said.

Adams said Byrd has been charged with death of a child by parent and by abuse. If found guilty the charge carries a 10 to 40 year sentence.

“The baby had a fractured skull, fractured legs, fractured collarbone and multiple bruises,” Adams said. “At first we did not rule it as a homicide but the medical examiner has confirmed that the child was beaten to death. The parents stated that the infant had awoken the father gasping for breath, having trouble breathing, and upon the arrival of the EMS, the infant had stopped breathing. By the time the baby had reached the hospital, it had passed away.”

The mother of the child, Ashley Owens, is currently serving two years unsupervised probation for an incident with another infant that was removed from her care in McDowell County in 2011. The infant had a fractured skull and other serious injuries and the child was placed in permanent foster care.

Police have obtained a warrant for Byrd and are actively searching for him.

“I would definitely take any tips on Byrd’s location,” Adams said. “Call the Bluefield Police station at 327-6101.”
