Locomotive leaks oil in McDowell County

NORTHFORK — A locomotive that blew a crankcase and was leaking oil in McDowell County was moved off the track for repairs around 7:30 p.m. according to Northfork Fire Chief Eric Graham.

When the crankcase blew it sprayed oil on almost everything around it and black smoke filled the air, Graham said.

“We diked the creek in case any oil had gotten into the water and the clean up was turned over to the Norfolk Southern hazmat team,” Graham said.

According to a dispatcher at McDowell County 911, the Welch Fire Department, Kimball Fire Department and Northfork Fire Department were on scene to help clean up the oil going into the water.

The train was delayed but did not impact any other trains, NS spokesman Robin Chapman said.
