Today is the deadline to file for town council and mayoral races across Tazewell County.
The voter registration office at the courthouse in Tazewell will be open until 7 p.m. this evening to accommodate last-minute candidate filings, county Registrar Brian Earls said. Candidates vying for town council or mayoral seats in Tazewell, Richlands and Bluefield, Va., are required to have signed petitions. Petitions are not required in Pocahontas and Cedar Bluff, Va.
As of Monday afternoon, additional candidates were needed to fill ballot vacancies in the towns. Voters will determine council members, and mayoral candidates, Nov. 4 in Bluefield, Va., Pocahontas, Tazewell, Cedar Bluff and Richlands.
“Nineteen offices are up — three mayors and 16 council seats,” Earls said. “We have a full slate for Bluefield, but only two of three have filed in Cedar Bluff and only two of four have filed in Pocahontas.”
And as of Monday afternoon, Earls said only two candidates had filed for the town council races in Tazewell where three council seats must be filled. Also as of Monday, there was no opposition in the three mayoral races that will be decided on Nov. 4. Only the incumbents, including Pocahontas Mayor Benjamin Gibson, Tazewell Mayor Don Buchanan and Richlands Mayor Jan White, had filed for re-election.
There are no mayoral races this year in Bluefield or Cedar Bluff.
Earls said additional candidate filings are expected before the deadline today.
“I’m hoping so,” Earls said. “We have candidate packets out for several others, but they have yet to file.”
