3 remain hospitalized after fatal Memorial Day crash

PEARISBURG, Va. — Three people injured in a Memorial Day crash in Giles County remain hospitalized.

The accident occurred on U.S. Route 460, less than a mile east of Alpine Road. The driver of the vehicle, Linda Marie Hilton, 32, of Newport, died Tuesday at a local hospital, according to Corinne Geller, public relations director for the Virginia State Police.

Three passengers who were ejected from the vehicle remain hospitalized.

Geller said the front-seat passenger, Callie J. Eanes, 17, and backseat passenger, Oren L. Price, 28, were both ejected from the vehicle. Geller said neither one was wearing a seat belt. Both were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

Geller said a third passenger, Michael L. Price, 8, was seated behind the driver. He was wearing a shoulder belt and was not ejected. Geller said the child was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Geller said the 1994 Jeep Wrangler operated by Hilton was traveling east on Route 460 when it ran off the right side of the highway. Geller said the driver overcorrected and the vehicle crossed over the eastbound lanes and ran off the left side of the highway. As the driver overcorrected a second time, the Jeep overturned, ejecting three of its four occupants. The Jeep came to a rest off the left side of the eastbound lanes of Route 460, according to the report.
