2014 TRIAD Senior Day delivers valuable information to area residents

TAZEWELL, Va. — Seniors from around Tazewell County gathered information and resources at the 2014 TRIAD Senior Day.

Speakers included Commonwealth's Attorney Dennis Lee and Major Harold Heatley of the Tazewell County Sheriff's Office, other speakers include Jerry Gilbert of Richlands Police Department and Norma Bowman with Clinch Valley Community Action.

“We provided information to seniors about different things the sheriff’s office provides to the community and we also did a demonstration with the k-9 units,” Heatley said.

TRIAD vice chairman Katie Mooney said, “we are here to educate and raise awareness to seniors about what is going on in the community. We gave information about scams, email scams, Medicare fraud, domestic violence and neighborhood watch programs.”

The special needs in disaster booth was set up to talk to seniors about a new program they are promoting.

Anyone with a special need can register for the special needs in disaster, where their information is in the 911 center so incase of an emergency such as a disaster their information can be assessed to see what kind of attention they may need, member of the SNID team Susan White said.

“We are encouraging everyone with a need to do this, incase there was something to happen and someone had to go to a shelter we can pull this information up and for example know if a person needs oxygen, walker, dentures, glasses and much more,” White said.

Bob and Ann Parks, of Tazewell, said they came out to keep up with what’s going on in their community.

“We have come before and we like getting the information so we can be careful. We learned a lot from the sheriff’s department on what they can do to help us and also on the scam presentation. We were scammed last year and it’s helpful to know some of the information so we can look out for it next time,” Ann Parks said.
