Officers find cash, heroin after hit and run

PRINCETON — A Hinton man is behind bars after officers with the Princeton Police Department discovered an estimated $15,000 worth of heroin and $14,000 after responding to a hit and run on Mercer Street in Princeton.

Shawn Gillespie, 24, was charged with possession with the intent to distribute and leaving the scene of an accident

According to Chief J. W. Howell, with the Princeton Police Department, officers responded to the hit and run on Monday, May 12 at 4:30 p.m. The suspect hit a parked car on Mercer Street and continued to Andrew’s Car Rental on Thorn Street.

“Upon arrival, they saw the suspect taking items from the rental car to his personal vehicle. They also observed that the suspect appeared to be impaired,” Howell said.

Lt. T.A. Gray, officer J.S. Faris and officer C.L. Mullins arrested Gillespie for leaving the scene of the accident on Mercer Street and suspected DUI.

“Upon searching the suspect, officers found $14,000 and $12,000 to 15,000 street value worth of heroin,” Howell said.

Howell also said the initial hit and run call was made by an Andrew’s Car Rental employee who had tracked down the overdue rental car and was following Gillespie to the rental business on Thorn Street.

Gillespie is being held on a $50,000 bond at the Southern Regional Jail.
